Keyhole Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where do we meet?
A: Typically at the Long’s Peak Ranger Station parking lot but other alternatives can be arranged.

Q: How long does the hike take?
A: I don't even like this question because of the variables involved. We start early but we get back in the afternoon. It just depends.

Q: What do we need to bring?
A: Nothing fancy but see our List of Items.

Q: How do I regester for a hike?
A: Our reservation page will walk you through all the steps.

Q: How much does it cost for hiking Long’s Peak?
A: Take a look at our Price List.

Q: What time do we start?
A: Typically around 3:30 a.m. to be up and off before any afternoon thunderstorms roll in.

Q: I've heard that the "Narrows" are scary. How bad are they really?
A: Most clients don't even realize they have passed them.

Q: I am flying in from sea level and am concerned about the altitude. Will this affect my hike?
A: Probably some but the effects can be minnimised. There are a number of things that can help with the altitude. Look at our Altitude Fact sheet to help out. While it is important to keep in mind, most clients find out they were more concerned than was warrented.

Q: What can we do to get in shape for such a high mountain as Long's Peak?
A: A combination of being in the best cardio shape you can manage plus sometime spent at high altitude is a great start. Don't be afraid to just come as you are and do your best. Who knows? It might not be that bad.

Q: What is the season for climbing Longs Peak?
A: For hikers on the "Keyhole" the National Park Service will determine when
they think the peak is free enough of snow that an average hiker can climb it safely. This is normally some time in June to the first significant snows in the fall.

Q: What else can my party do to prepare?
A: Taking a rock climbing lesson before you go can greatly increase your
confidence and efficiency for the rock scrambling on the upper stretch of the mountain.

Q: How can I find out the answer to a Question that is not listed?
