Rock Climbing Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have never been before. Do you take people out like me?
A: YES. We take out all abilities of climbers including "never-evers." The majority of our clients are in the beginner or intermediate levels of climbing.

Q: Where do we meet?
A: Typically at your hotel or campground but other alternatives can be arranged. We are flexible.

Q: How long do we climb for?
A: When you hire a guide from us you will get us for the day. It is your vacation so if you want to sleep in it is up to you. We can begin at 7 am but for you sleepyheads I recommend starting no later than 9 am. We want you to get as much climbing in as you like.

Q: What do we need to bring?
A: Remember all of your technical equipment is provided so you will just need some basics for being outside all day -- nothing fancy. See our List of Items.

Q: How much does it cost for a day of climbing?
A: Take a look at our Price List.

Q: What time do we start?
A: Again it is up to you. Usually sometime between 7:30 and 9 am.

Q: I am afraid of climbing but I want to try climbing, How can you help me?
A: We have a number of climbing areas that we can choose from and we pick an area that will fit your needs. Our guides are comfortable with clients of various abilities and special needs. Please let us know so we can tailor build your experience. Our guides are trained by the American Mountain Guide Association to be Top Rope Site Managers, this is the perfect certification for clients like you.

Q: This may be a silly question but what is the difference between top roping and multi-pitch climbing?
A: Not a silly question, and a little bit of a long answer (sorry). There are lots of code words in climbing and these are just a few. Some similarities between the two are that in both types of climbing both participants are at the bottom of the rock and are connected to each other by a rope. In top-roping the rope from the climber goes up to an anchor point, then comes down and attaches to the safety (belayer). As the climber ascends the rock the safety (belayer) takes in the excess rope to protect the climber from taking a significant fall. In multi-pitch there is no set anchor at the top of the climb. As the climber (leader) ascends the rock the belayer lets rope out to give the climber (leader) more rope and space. It is the leader’s job to create anchors as they climb. She can do this by placing special gear into cracks and holes in the rock. Once she has a piece of protective gear (protection) placed securely in the rock she attaches the rope to the gear with a clip (carabineer) and usually a length of webbing (sling). This allows the rope to not have to many twists and turns in it when the leader climbs. Once the leader gets to a safe place to stop (this is many times a ledge, or somewhere that has a place to stand, there may even be bolts drilled into the rock in more popular areas) she creates a station to belay from. They switch jobs: leader now becomes the belayer, and the belayer now begins to climb. It is this climber’s job to remove the protection as he climbs. Once he reaches the belay station this is the end of the first pitch. The two climbers get ready to climb the next section of rock or pitch. We at Long's Peak Mountain Guides teach and take clients out using both methods of climbing.

Q: I am flying in from sea level and am concerned about the altitude. Will this affect my climb?
A: There may be some effects but they can be minimized. There are a number of things that can help with the altitude. Look at our Altitude Fact sheet to help out. While it is important to keep in mind, most clients find out they were more concerned than was warranted. Remember you are not running a marathon.

Q: What can we do to get in shape for climbing?
A: Stretching and some strength training is a plus but not needed. Sometime spent at high altitude is a great too. Don't be afraid to just come as you are and do your best. Most of our clients are regular people who just want to do something fun outside. Who knows? It might not be that bad.

Q: What is the season for climbing in Colorado?
A: The weather out here is great and we can climb year round in many areas. Don't hesitate to call and ask about climbing no matter what time of year.

Q: What else can my party do to prepare?
A: Relax. Just come on out and have a good time. You hired us to take care of the rest.

Q: How can I find out the answer to a Question that is not listed?
A: Contact us. We will be happy to help you out the best we can.
